International travel
International trains to Groningen: We encourage participants from Europe to take the train to Groningen. For instance, it's 6 hours from Paris (1 change), 7.5 hours from London (2 changes) or 6-8 hours from Berlin (1 or 2 changes). To check times and book international trains, use NS-International or Omio; for recently introduced alternatives for international trains to the Netherlands, see European Sleeper or GoVolta.
(International) buses to Groningen: Groningen is served by the FlixBus network, with connections to, among others, Amsterdam, Brussels, Hamburg and Berlin.
Flying: The closest major airport is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. To get to Groningen, take a train from Schiphol station, which is in walking distance from the baggage claim area. There is an hourly direct train to Groningen (the final stop of the train) that takes 2 hours and 12 minutes. See "National travel" below for train ticket information.
Groningen also has an airport of its own with a small number of destinations.
Ferries: There are various ferries from the UK to the Netherlands; see this guide.
National travel
Planning: For all public transportation in the Netherlands, we recommend the app/website 9292.nl to plan your trip.
Regular train tickets: There are no seat reservations on Dutch national trains. You can buy a ticket from the ticketing machines in the station. From Schiphol Airport to Groningen, this costs € 33.30 each way.
Off-Peak Group Ticket: Groups of 2 or more can travel at a discount on the train with an NS Off-Peak Group Ticket. The ticket is valid on your selected date and route on any NS train during off-peak hours: all day on weekends, and on weekdays before 6:30, between 9:00–16:00, and after 18:30. The bigger the group, the lower the price per person, but with a group of 2 you are already saving almost half of the price of a ticket from Schiphol Airport to Groningen. See https://www.ns.nl/en/tickets/off-peak-group-ticket for details.
Local travel
Local travel: ANTS will take place in the Feringa building at Zernike Campus. To get there by public transport, use bus lines 1, 2, 9, 15 or 171 and get off at Crematoriumlaan. On these busses, you check in and check out by tapping your debit card, credit card or phone etc. Busses no longer accept change and it is not possible to buy a ticket at the bus stop. Plan your trip using 9292.nl.
Alternatively, we very much recommend renting a bike; it's the most convenient and pleasant way to get around Groningen. Here are some places to rent bikes:
- Fietsverhuur Groningen
- Refide on campus, 5 minutes walking from bus stop Crematoriumlaan and less than 10 minutes from Feringa building.
